They were two senior students and that's about all that was required for them to end up on a supply run together. Everyone had their fair share to do for their home. Noriko had been through enough in her life to understand and appreciate what it took for her to live in a shared space and to be grateful for it. As for her partner in this little assignment? Personally she didn't know Joseph Danvers but when a bad reputation reached even Nori's ears, you knew it must be pretty bad. Since she'd returned to the mansion Nori, almost completely behind closed doors to the rest of her peers had fought off an addiction to a drug that temporarily dampened mutant powers, re-learned to control her powers, and faced the man she'd been hurt, killed and scarred by, and...was now engaged to. Not in that order.

Her eyes had settled on some flaw in the window of the passenger side of the vehicle she was in as she contemplated for about the three hundred and sixty fourth time (give or take) what exactly she was thinking when she said 'yes.' Getting married? Noriko loved Zach Stanton... and sometimes it was almost like she didn't have a choice in the matter. When she was with him everything was almost instinctual. It made sense without the words to describe it. She belonged to him... but then she was away from him, the world and her attentions on herself and where she could improve. Noriko was absolutely excelling in every matter concerning goal achievement and what she wanted...except this one.

Nori recently discovered a useful side effect of her powers. In her control training she'd learned how to elevate and lower the speed of her electrical current and even how to concentrate it within certain parts if her body. She figured out a long time ago that Zach could tell when she was lying by hearing the speed of her heartbeat. She been practicing changing the speed at will. Noriko had been practicing lying to her...to her fiance. It still felt strange to refer to Zach Stanton as a fiance, but there it was. Absently Nori tucked a lock of electric blue hair behind her ear. She still hadn't even started planning a wedding. She'd been spending more time finding more excuses to be away from Zach which wasn't too hard considering he was in fact an X-Man now. His busyness had been...a relief.

“Then I was like, suah Iceman , but only if you put the popsicle back in yoah pants and….”

Noticing for the first time in fifteen minutes of driving that his saga had not received the rapt attention it deserved, Joseph glanced at the distant wistfulness of his previously captive audience and scowled. His attention returned to the crowded road.

Yet, as always, whenever there was less of Joseph, there was more of the Other.

Guilty relief, the bitter sweetness of fleshly possession, the looming promise of forever when the now had just begun to yield its fruit. Sakura blossoms were soft against the cheek. A cage of strong arms prevented eager hands from catching them.

Yeeaah these trips are nice foah a break an all,” he began slowly, as if responding to a emphatic sentiment Noriko had verbalized.

“Specially for you …,”
he led a little uncertainly, a charlatan’s improvisation assisted by sifted sentiments. The sudden feeling of thick corded arms embracing him against a torso the texture of warm yielding steel and body burning with need brought on a blink of surprise and swift swallow to stifle a yelp. Soft yearning lips enveloping everything a thick animalistic redolence that drowned all thought in the brutal sweetness of subjugation…made it kina difficult to drive. “with him … things are kina all set huh?”

…bitch just homo-zapped him!

Grey eyes narrowed as something clicked, a taut cord stretched between instinctual devotion and rational determination. “Man…wont be going on allota of these anymoah huh?” The non-question was aggressively conciliatory, the emphatic nod with which it was delivered possessing a jocular finality.

Period of silence allowed the prophecy of captive matrimony to sink in, before Joseph offered unrequested forgiveness after cutting off a sluggish competitor at a four-way stop. “Oh …um, don’ have tah feel bad by the way,” said the angel, shaking his head and grinning like he’d caught Noriko with Eden’s forbidden fruit in her mouth. A sly wink forgave the ache of duplicity like a joke between friends.

Truly, Noriko had stopped paying attention to the boy who she never would have guessed was within her own age group a long while ago. He really only managed to tho earn a glance from the stoic electrokinetic when he said the word 'you.' He'd clearly been talking to her directly rather than at her. Nori ws pretty sure that prior to this outing they were thrown together on, the twoof thenhad never spoken a word to eachother before. They'd been in maybe one class together before...maybe.

Her eyes slinked back toward him as he continued on and her expression shifted very slowly from suspicious to outright hostile. Did he mean...? Was he talking about the engagement? She'd only told two people about that. Shit... was he a telepath?

"Nani!? What are you talking about, Joseph?" Nori really wasn't sure why but she felt her cheeks heating in embarrassment like he'd caughther in a lie or something worse. That didn't mean she was careless enough to start volunteering information he had yet to actually prove he had. But he HAD managed to spook her enough that she forgot to speak English for a moment. "I don't feel bad about anything." and that was an unexpected lie on her part. Noriko did feel guilty. She'd been finding every excuse to find time away from her fiance.

“Listen, zappy chick with blue hair and six feet of scowling sausage,” Joseph attempting furrowed his sandy brows, slightly pursed his lips and gave Nori his best Zach the Neanderthal stink eye impression. “…yeah supah inconspicuous.”

Joe returned his attention to showing the drivers of the New York suburbs how right of way worked in Dorchester, which is to say he sowed a wake of wide eye and vigorously upraised third digits through intersections like Musa of Mali glitzed gold to Mecca. Noriko’s protestation elicited a smirk and derisive snort. “If agents stop our asses on I-5, please tell me yoah gonna try a bit hadah then that.,” the empath noted with breezy disdain, as if Noriko had woodenly flubbed a line reading.

“I’m catch and release status but I’m pretty suah there’s a hydro-electric dam out theah with yoah name on it."

The look that Joseph's impression of her fiance elicited out of Noriko was a cold hard flat one indeed. Her lips were more relaxed than pursed but that didn't stop her from looking thoroughly unamused. Inconspicuous? Oh...he didn't believe her. He went on to say that if they got stopped by agents she'd have to try harder and that little bit of insinuated imagery he added at the end with the hydro electric dam made the young woman stiffen in her seat. Her capture when she was just thirteen came flooding back to her mind, the generator they'd hooked her up to...the feel of the live wires through her body. Nori shut her eyes tightly and shook her head but it was too late her growing discomfort initiated a quick yank of power.

The vehicle began to stall and Nori huffed in anger at herself. It wasn't often she lost control of her powers. It had been even longer since she'd thought about the days she was in the clutches of the MRD.

The stalling seemed to be a one time deal and she blew out a sigh because the last time Noriko had tried to 'jump' a car battery it nearly exploded. That was something she just hadn't figured out how to do yet. "Do you get something out of pissing people off?" she wondered aloud and she hadn't said it in some seething tone either. Like it was a pretty legitimate question. "Does it actually help you?"

“Hey now,” Joe gasped in protest. The feeling of smallness, convulsing as burning filaments twitched like hot spider legs through his tissues and veins also caused suddenly unsteady hands to veer the car right off the freeway. Yet, it was lingering nausea that caused to grey eyes to shift from the road and narrow at the fulgurkinetic. Shame was a bird spiraling down on wounded wings, hollowness filled with lightning and needles dripping with euphoric venom. Long healed scars on Joseph’s arms itched. “Cut it out,” he snapped.

He didn’t notice the car’d been stalling till a few seconds later. Yeah…stop that to!

“Eh,”
Joseph admittedly to her questions with a ‘so so’ waggle of the handle above the steering wheel. “Probably…,” boyish features creased as into a brief squint in the affectation of grueling mental calculus. “bout the same thing yoah whole model minority act gets you.” The boil of the other drivers’ road rage simmered in the psychic’s gut, setting fire to the lungs and clearing sinuses with the choleric spice of vexation. “Havin the conversations you want, while avoidin the ones you don’.”

A thoroughly jacked Jesus fended off the Satan’s scarlet hordes with a shining sword on an approaching billboard to their right. Giant kitschy papyrus font assured Joseph that ‘help was just one prayer away.’

“If love’s all you need ...why want moah,” asked the boy who wanted everything without having to bear it like Atlas.“Soo selfish,” he chided with a smirk. All of him, foah all of you,” the emphasis was unusually bereft of carnality, implying the offered blade had been an unmarked bid on her totality. Featly for freedom. Full rose-colored lips curved in dubiety at the archaic duet of reminiscence in Noriko, doubting she wore the Edo silks very well with actually having a spine and all.“Fair trade right?”

A certain buff brunette invaded Joseph’s thoughts, another trade it seemed selfish to weigh so dearly. Scott wanted more then Joe could give, and imaguined Joe to be far more then he was.

“But it doesn friggen feel like it huh?” The chuckle that followed was more ruefully companionable then mocking, the acerbic regret of one’d who contented himself with ceaseless satiation after finding the price of fulfillment far to dear. “Isn’ love supposed to be grace.” inquired the lapsed catholic with an almost wistful softness as they navigated a bypass. “Not sacrifice?”

The car pulled over and Noriko gazed narrowly at Joey as he told her to ‘cut that out.’ It had been what prompted her incredulous question in the first place which he unsurprisingly answered as casually as someone might answer the question ‘what would you like for lunch today?’ Then he tossed out the ‘good minority’ act and she rolled her eyes sinking down into her seat a bit and folding her arms over her chest. Was he serious? ”People can choose to have what conversations they want to have regardless of their ‘minority group.’ Besides we’re both minorities now.” she pointed out forcing her tone to remain even and illustrate her point on ‘rising above the conversation.’ It was still pretty obvious by her body language and the way that tiny sparks occasionally danced over her skin on her fingertips and her face that he was getting to her though.

Joey went on to ask his own question and when she rose a brow at him not quite understanding he continued, emphasizing all. He didn’t mean her body and he didn’t mean Zach’s body. He meant the very nature of their beings, everything they were. Zach had already sworn it to her. He swore it to her before all of it. He swore it to her before she found out she was pregnant and had the miscarriage, before they ran off to California a few years ago, before he came back to New York without her, before she’d gotten into power enhancing and dampening black market drugs, and gang activity in Los Angeles. He swore it again when she returned. He swore he looked for her. He swore he never gave up. He placed his katanas in her hands and his blades at his throat to prove himself. He saved her from her addictions and he replaced them with himself.

Was love all she needed? Was it really? Could Noriko swear herself to Zach that way? Would she place her life in his hands? Her life had been in his hands a few times, but never willingly. Zach might have failed her now and then, but he always did what was right by her in the end. Part of Nori always wondered if there would ever come a time where he would need to save her from himself, or worse from herself, and it would be too late. He was a Howlett, he was dangerous, she might as well have been a sword swallower for ever tempting him, but she couldn’t get enough of the flash in his eyes, the way she could hear inhuman rage in his voice like you could see heat off of concrete. He was beautiful and terrifying, just like those katana blades and loving him would probably kill her some day. To swear herself was to inevitably submit. Submit to the idea that he was the rest of her life and no matter what else was in her life he would be the only constant. Maybe it was a dramatic way of thinking, but after what the two of them had been through, was there really any fairy tale ending? Could any mutant have the ‘grace’ that love was supposed to mean? They started driving again. Nori hadn’t noticed. She was too hung up on Joey’s words. ‘Sacrifice’ was the painfully accurate way to describe it. She could feel that very rare cauterized emptiness she sometimes felt in her stomach when Takeo, the son didn't have, came to mind. That emptiness was the thing about her she hadn’t told Zach…or anyone really. The damage from her particular miscarriage and just how permanent frying her insides with electricity turned out to be even for an electrokinetic.

“Look Ashida,”
continued Joseph after a period of silence, staring dully at impenetrable traffic as the dry not-quite-acrid smell of burnt ozone wafted through the car. “..yoah smart, supah screwable,” a once over with a raise of sandy eyebrows assured Noriko that she passed par, “and people actually like you.”

“Yoah ‘forevah aftah’ is worth somethin,” Joe said in a less marrowy tone, watching tarmac inch by. Maybe he was crazy, but how’d the traffic get so thick all’a sudden? Joe’d felt pretty much in control for a while there. But the stuff he was getting from Blue-bowlcut here…that emptiness. The churning in the stomach like he’d was sprinting toward and away from the same force wearing different faces, had no right to make his head spin like a frisbee when the car was going this friggen slow.

“God Fuck-it,”
he snapped without warning, rounding on Noriko. “Yoah like what,” One hand waved vaguely up an down at the length of Noriko “ … in yoah… jail-batty teens or whatevah?” Honestly, he had no idea, but the fact remained, “Don’ this all seem a little soon?”

Half pissed at how asinine this one fourth of a conversation was and half unnerved by how invested he sounded to himself, Joe grimaced back at the road. But the quiet only allowed more prominence to that cauterized hollowness, a smoking caldera where’d once been a cradle of life.

Losing that kid, Joe’s nephew…strange thinking of them that way, had changed Carol. She’d always veered away from the cheerleader to sudden mother to baby-pumping super-wife of Danvers tradition, a pattern shared by pretty every other chick Joe was related to. But the breeding brats expectation didn’t just go away. God, Da’d been friggen livid Carol’d let slip that not only had super-space boyfriend fucked off, but some Star Wars laser BBQed the next generations. Carol’d done wrong by becoming a spy, a soldier, but at least she could be a mother. Once she couldn’t even do that much, it’d been unforgivable. Joe remembered how Da’d been roaring and cussin’ about “what use was she now?” as Mom dragged her youngest out of the war zone, tears trickling down onto his arm.

Carol obsessively adopted random strays and put up with living with an abusive thug cause Da’d convinced the most powerful woman in the world that her entire life had ended with that g’damn kid. Joe Sr. was a man by which all other men were measured by, but there were some things even a son couldn’t forgive.

“You don’ owe Zach nothin’ just cuz his kid died inside’a you,” he intoned quietly, three missed mental steps from keeping it in his head. Yoah still alive.”

'Screwable?' Noriko was definitely a little hung up on that part of his words, her cheeks growing pink in embarassment. That just wasn't the kind of thing she was used to her peers coming out and saying like that. The message, however, was not lost on Noriko. Her 'forever after was worth something.' Quite suddenly Joey's tone changed and he snapped at her causing her to jump at how very unexpected it was. He was looking at her, his eyes a little wild and she stared at him a bit wide eyed in return as he surmised her age group as far as she could tell. Nori had a lot to chew on while her insides were cheerfully reminding her of some of her most violent ghosts.

Tentative fingertips brushed over the right side of her stomach where a small tattoo of birds in flight was hidden by her modest tank top. Nori didn't often show her midriff. What he said quietly and almost bitterly pulled her eyes to him once again. They were wide with shock. How did he? How could he? No one knew. No one. Joey added that she was still alive, that her life wasn't over and that she didn't owe it to Zach because she'd lost his baby. Life after Takeo. She understood Joey's words but it didn't change her agony.

Tears gathered in her eyes before she could stop them and she blinked a few too many times before quickly averting her gaze. Guilt and shame engulfed her like a swarm of bees as memories of that time of her life flooded her. She'd pulled electricity out of every availble outlet and appliance. She'd flooded her body with the current and expelled it as she pleased. She was addicted to the sting like an alcoholic needed to drink. The rush of it all was everything to her then. It sizzled and it crackled throughout her and though her own organs had begun to adapt to her self abuse, the life she hadn't known was growing inside her at the time hadn't stood a chance. She'd cooked her insides. She'd killed her own baby. "But it was my fault." she whispered. Despair gripped at her throat and her powers tugged at the vehicle's power again nearly stalling it out.

About the time the car went frizzy again in the middle of traffic and his stomach started fill with phantom char, Joe decided they needed to get the fuck off the road or there’d be more dead then just half-wolf babies.

Maneuvering through a tide of outrage and honking, Joseph parked them by the overpasses’ concrete ledge. Sunshine did no favors to the industrial district shabbily extending out below them. Rolling down the window, the empath took in deep breaths of exhaust filled hot breeze while Noriko’s despair flogged him from the inside.

He’d been high as a friggen kite when Rogue came for Carol. It was Steven’s wake and Joe’d wanted to be anywhere but looking at his bro’s casket in the living room, drapped up and down with the Stars and Stripes. Cars weren’t fast enough, but the needle’d taken him far far away. He’d been sprawled on his bed with a blissful smile as Carol was getting the fucking life ripped out of her in the next room over. Mom and Da’d come home from preparing the gave to find him dazedly poking Carol’s with confused dilated eyes. Later people tried say it wasn't his fault, but having become Super last year, Joe could tell they were lying.

Could he really tell the same lie to Nori, pretend that the kid dying had no connection to her making its little body a livewire?

“Nothing’ll bring your son back,” was Joseph answer to the both of them. “ Nothin’,” he emphasized slowly, “Includin’ feeling’ like shit all the time. He’s up theah,” an upward thumb indicated the bright azure April sky, “Yoah down heah, and tryin to see im’ early won’ work,” Joe concluded, revealing more of catechism classes’ subtle prejudices had stuck more then Joe let on.

“Even becomin’ beta bitch foah life to his Dad,” Joe shrugged, faithfully summarizing wifely duties as concluded from observing Mrs Danvers. "Kid’ll stay dead.”

Nori was already far too distraught to really be concerned by Joseph's odd panting behaviour. It didn't come as a surprise that he needed to pull the vehicle over with her in it as worked up as she was, but it was his panting that was particularly peculiar. She watched him with a trace of terror in her eyes as though he held far more power to shred her piece by piece than any Zach Stanton ever did.

Nothing would bring her son back. Nothing. It wasn't as though she didn't know that. It wasn't as though she hadn't entirely snuffed out any hope for future children the day she learned she'd destroyed herself but she'd never shared this information with anyone. Nori didn't even dare weep aloud in the dark. No one had ever said these words to her. Her son was...gone. Nori was never really sure what she believed when it came to the afterlife. At first the reminder that she couldn't join him early seemed insulting. Nori was never at a point of wanting to kill herself, but was she not always in pursuit of danger? Crime, drugs, men with abhorrent temperments, oversurges, even a passion for parkour and now becoming a hero with the X-men. At first glance those stages of her life didn't seem to share anything in common...but 'danger' was and is always present in Noriko's life.

'Bravery' on its own was usually an admirable trait in someone, but was it possible that she was that way for the wrong reasons? Furthermore was that the reason she was even with Zach, because she felt she owed it to him? There was always a reason for her to question her desire for following him, her reason for loving him...but she was sure of it now even in the dark of these thoughts...she did love him. She did...didn't she? Her jaw tightened, electrical energy crackling over the skin of her upper arms and her neck.

Who was this Joseph Danvers, anyway? Who was he to cause her to question herself this way? "What is it you gain for making me question everything that I am?" she asked him, her eyes brimming with threatening tears. "No one is to know that I'm...I'm...ruined." she told him with a strong emphasis on 'no one.' "Do you understand?" Her eyes had grown just a little wild, the tiny coronas on her skin prickling out in tiny sparks as she pretty blatently threatened him.

Joe let out a small huffing sound that didn’t quite reach a chuckle at Noriko’s question. “Evah heard the phrase: Misery loves company?” The thumbed his own chest before reaching over in front of Noriko to open the dashboard compartment. From a clutter of gum sticks, X-man insignia, speeding tickets, condoms, maps, and an exquisite silver crucifix beside a pistol, Joe retrieved a luster of kleenex an offered it his passenger.

“Rui-wha?” On good days considering himself the epitome of a red-blooded man, Joe applied his gynaecological expertise to the grave error hand. “Listen Harakiri-Ashida,” he noted in a one-breathed Englrish abomination,”What I undahstand is yoah fuckin gorgeous enough to make any guy yoah sex-bitch. Stanton’s just lucky.” Joe nodded while making hand sign to show Scout’s Honor was in play “You can ‘pparently shut down whole cars just from gettin’ sad,” an akward motion was made to indicate her moistening composure, “and are probably goin’ to be a superhero in a few months.”

Joseph learned learned forward, seeking to lock her gaze with his wide mist-colored eyes. “Noriko, I know what Ruined is,” the words came out slow and soft before accelerating into a blistering East Coast brogue. “Theah are people who’ve been fucked in the ass so hard by life theres barely any of em’ left,” Joseph pointed out into traffic at the passing drivers. Though presumably rhetorical, the empath’s finger was indicating specific drivers with an effortless pinpoint specificity. “They have nothin’ to offah nobody anymoah,” the boys annunciation was bitterly pointed, “an nowhere they can evah feel safe. That? That’s what Ruined is. Joe pointed a finger accusingly at Noriko. “A deadly electro-wizard-ninja Asian Charlies Angel that can fuck her musclebeach werewolf boytoy all day without needin’ protection?” Joseph rolled his eyes and started up the car. “Thats not Ruined, that’s called adoption.”

“But suah whatevah,” he said with a sigh while attempting to rejoin traffic, “I’ll keep yoah secret.”

Misery loves company? Did Joe really get satisfaction out of bringing people down with him? Enough even to put his own life in danger by ticking off a living electric chair or someone worse she could only assume. Evidently Joey didn't much care for Noriko's use of the word 'ruined.' He began listing off the reasons she was not and confused she simply watched him from her side of the car, a lost expression on her face.

For a fleeting moment, the boy's strange accent seemed to melt away when he leaned forward, his eyes nearly borin into hers. Joe told her very seriously that he knew what 'ruined' was. His definition of someone who was 'ruined' was basically someone beat down by life so hard that there was nothing left of them. That person he was describing was quite possibly the girl she was very close to becoming not so long ago. It was what prompted her to return to the mansion...but even then she remained on the wrong tangled paths for quite some time still struggling with drug addiction and an utter lack of self worth. Evidently some of that lingered in her still.

It was her reunion with Zach that got her back her ambition. He'd been the one to drag her off of the streets and back to the mansion. He was almost cruel in his cold way of forcing her clean. Most addicts were weaned off but Zach kept her under lock and key, took her abuse and her tantrums until it was all over.

Joey pointed out that adoption was always an option. Noriko very much doubted that it was a very easy option for the superpowered kind...but that wasn't exactly the point. That could change someday. Perhaps it wasn't the conclusion Joey intended or thought Noriko would come to, but he'd managed to remind her of where she was before she came back and everything Zach had to put up with just to get the real Noriko back. "You're being kind to me." she concluded with a somber expression on her face. "You aren't very good at it, but I understand now."

“Well I mean,” Joe predicated quickly, hands briefly tightening on the wheel at Noriko’s observation. “I totally would take you hard up ‘gainst the wall any-day if you weren’t so panty foah Stanton n’all,” he guaranteed to Noriko, making sure she knew his motives were properly sordid after that suggestion of funny business. “So that all’s just the facts,” he assured before turning back to survey the state of the overpass.

The young man’s tense posture seemed to ease up some after the sheltering bulwark of sensuality was in place, a fleshly assurance that kept him safe and unclean. “But uh,” he struggled with how to phrase it, boyish features creasing as he navigated both traffic and his own confusing sentiments. “Just,” the injection came out a little too strong, “this marriage shit is serious fuckin’ business.” Realizing that he made an unlikely defender of the sacraments the cherub rushed through his next words, a scarlet warmth creeping up the back of his neck.

“Sorry for eavedroppin’, but I just had say somethin’ is all,” he said with an affected shrug.
