If Rogue wasn't in her room, it was a pretty safe bet she was in the main kitchen. She liked doing her baking down where anyone could pop in and she could get to know some of the students better. It also meant she could give impromptu cooking and baking lessons whenever one of them appeared. If it also happened to make Rogue appear more approachable with her reputation, all the better.

None of the sweets she made ever stuck around for long with all the hungry mouths to feed. Rogue hummed as she dropped another glob of chocolate chip cookie dough onto the parchment paper covered cookie sheet, that was the last one that would fit so she stuck it in the over and moved to the next batch. She rarely made just one batch at a time, the ones she was mixing up on now we're peanut butter for those who didn't like chocolate. Measuring out and pouring in the last of the ingredients, Rogue started mixing those with a wooden spoon.

Mel was still exploring the school, even though she had been here before the place had changed a bit. She wanted to get to know the place like it was new, give it a real chance. Especially with all her siblings seemingly on edge, she figured it was best to know where the best places where to cheer them up. She was always doing that, little things to make them smile. While she explored the big common room, her nose picked up a familiar smell, one that reminded her of home. She inhaled deeply and smiled letting out a little. "mmm." Following her nose to the kitchen door.

Mel popped her head in and saw a woman working a bowl, that meant she was making a second batch of cookies. Mel felt her lip curl into a smile, she figured no one really cooked around here. When she had come the first time, food just kind of manifested but now this was a real person making real cookies. Mel slipped inside the room closing the door with a bit of noise so the woman would hear her coming. "Hello, are ya makin' cookies?" If her looks alone didn't give her off as a Guthrie the accent generally did the trick.

And there was one of the students popping in now. Rogue didn't recognize the red head, so she assumed the girl was new. She grinned at the question, "Sure am shug, those chocolate chip cookies are jus' 'bout cool if yew wanna have one." Rogue pointed with her dough covered spoon. "Or yew cain wait fer some peanut butter," She added ad she stuck the spoon back in and finished mixing everything together.

With a few quick stirs aided by super strength, it didn't take Rogue any time at all to have the peanut butter cookies mixed up. "Ah don' know yew hon, what's yer name? How long yew been 'ere darlin? Ah'm Rogue, by th' way," She offered a smile as she started dropping pieces of dough on the cookie sheet.

Mel wasn't exactly a shy person and when Rogue piped up she smiled big and moved right into the room. She was a little shocked Rogue didn't point her out as a Guthrie, but it was also refreshing. Her family had a rep between Jay, Sam and Paige to be a little...rough. So all the teens had approached Mel the same way, she felt judged before people knew her. "Oh, it's nice ta meetcha. Ma name is Melody Guthrie. Ah been here once before when I was younger...It wasn't a good fit." She shrugged and inspected the cookies, they where indeed hot.

She waited a bit and smiled. "Ah ain't been here long, just a month er so, came in when Sam moved us up here." She sighed a bit. "It's...different, the people are nicer this time, not that Ah got a choice. Seein the family is nice." She shrugged a bit. Then scooped up a cookie it was too hot and she went to blow on it, a swift breeze left her lips, blowing Rogue's hair and fluttering the shades. Mel looked stunned, she clearly didn't know she could do that.

Peering more closely a the red headed girl, Rogue could see the family resemblance to the Guthrie family that lived in the building. She didn't know any of them well, but she knew of them at least and nodded in reply to show she understood. "Nice t'meet ya Melody. Ah was gone mahself fer a'few years so we prolly missed each other then," She replied, dropping another row of cookies onto the sheet.

"Ah had a'hard time Ah first came 'ere," She admitted, "Havin' yer family 'round is good even if yew don' always think do," Rogue grinned to show she got the whole living and going to school in all one place. Her attention focused back on the cookie sheet as she dropped the last row of dough for another batch. Winds ruffling her hair and rattling the blinds had Rogue's gaze jerking back up to an equally surprised looking Melody. Brown eyes blinked twice before she grinned at the girl, "Now tha's a'neat trick! Ah can have yew cool awll the cookies at once tha' way! What else can ya do kiddo?"

Mel smiled softly as Rogue explained how she too had a hard time at the school, you know how adults try to connect, but it never really seemed right. This wasn't one of those times, the way the girl just seemed earnest about taking time away, and having a hard time connecting, just felt...real. That was a new feeling around here, nothing in this crazy school ever felt real or just normal. Rogue, despite her weird name and honestly really cool hair, did seem kinda...normal. Mel couldn't remember any of the adults doing something simple like cooking last time she was here...outside Home ec.

Then the big gust happened, Mel's face went a little red from the action, especially looking at the face Rogue made. But, then she smiled, no one had really talk to her about her powers like they weren't some godsend or something. She never thought of them that way, or as a curse, just kind of, something that was part of her. Not her favorite part of her, well that was a lie flying was pretty darn amazing. Mel smiled a bit and spoke. "Sorry, that is a new one, umm didn't know Ah could do that but my big trick is this." She closed her eyes and a visible field began to form around her, Mel herself charged with kinetic energy, before slowly lifting off the ground up, and up and BAM! Right into the ceiling.

She rubbed her head and chuckled a little. "Ok that was dumb." landing and walking over to rogue she bit into the cookie, and melted with a loud. "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" She nodded a bit and smiled before swallowing. "So Rogue...issat like one a them cool nicknames x-men get?"

The girl seemed to be relaxing in any case. That cheered Rogue more than anything else. Too often it seemed like some students were intimidated by the X-men and high ups. She didn't believe that was the way things should be. Rogue believed that they should all work together and no body was better than anybody else. Magneto thought it was very naive way if thinking, but Marie squashed his cynical view of the world.

"A'least yers are more harmless than mine," She told Mel with a grin. Both eyebrows went up as The younger girl floated too quickly up to the ceiling, managing to crack her head in the process. "Shit! Need an ice pack hon?" Rogue's voice concerned rather than upset about Melody crashing into the ceiling. She reached out to steady the girl before realizing she wore no gloves and pulling her hand back.

The redhead recovered quickly and Rogue relaxed when she was unharmed. "Yer still learnin' don' sweat it shug," She flapped a hand at Melody, "Yew'd be better off in th' trainin' room where it's less likely fer yew t'get hurt." She blinked at Melody's question then laughed as she answered, "Som'man like that yeah. Ah started gonin' by Rogue when Ah wasn' much older'n yew when mah powers showed up. Yew givin' a'code name any thought kiddo?" She asked, leaning on the counter while she waited for cookies to bake.

Mel was still rubbing her head a bit while enjoying the cookie. "Ice pack may be good, my ma would chew me out if she knew Ah'd bonked my head showin of my powers." She chuckled a bit and then something Rogue said caught her interest. "Trainin' room? Issat a place we work on power an stuff? I ain't been there yet." She comment with a kind of curious joy, it was obvious that Mel overall was a happy kid, her powers fit her in a certain way, because nothing could really drag her down or make her too miserable.

"Ain't thought about it much to be honest, Ah never thought of usin my powers ta help people er nothin...that is what y'all do, right?" She actually didn't know much about the x-men as a whole, maybe today was a good time to learn. "Actually, Ah don' know nothin about the x-men, kinda don' watch the new er read the paper...what exactly do y'all do? Ah know ya teach folks like...umm like me..." She actually blushed and stammered at that, she wasn't used to referring to herself as a mutant, even though she had been one for three years it was still new to her. She looked at Rogue, as if asking for help, for guidance, she had no plans for her future, no direction, kind of blowing in the wind.

"Sure thing shug," Rogue replied, pulling out a dish towel and filling the middle with ice then tying it shut with a rubber band. "Eh, ain't a'big deal. Yes didn' hurt anything, bu' we'll keep between us," She winked, "Ah know how moms can be." Rogue talked as she put the ice pack together then held it out to Melody with a nod at the question about the training room. "Yew wanna help meh w'th the cookies an' then Ah can show yew where it is?" It would be a better environment to practice with powers and being able to fly too, Rogue could catch Mel if she fell.

Her smile gentled and Rogue nodded. "We teach ya responsibility an' control of their powers. Humans are scared cause they don't know any better. It's up t'us t'show th' world that mutants ain't a bad thing, just different and new. New can be scary an' scared folks are dangerous," That was the official X-Men speal anyway, but Rogue thought Melody could use a bit more of a personal tough too. "There are good an' bad of all kinds, human or mutant. We gotta out weigh th' bad or we'll never be able t'share th' world. Folks jus' ain't figured that out yet. It's hard work, bu' Ah think powers like yers would be good fer showin' off and puttin' folks at ease," She grinned, leaving out that Rogue's our powers wouldn't.

Mel watched her make the old fashioned Ice pack and got a bright smile, it reminded her of home and made her giggle a tiny bit as she took it and placed it against her skull. "Thanks, yeah...Ma isn't crazy about all of us havin powers...er bein here..AI ain't either ta be honest, not my favorite place ya know..." She trailed off a bit, but then the comment about humans being dangerous came up and the girl recoiled a little. "Yeah...Ah know about that one...Ah know the whole school knows how we were run out of town, an they attacked our home...people Ah grew up with just..."

She took a deep breath and then nodded to the question about seeing the training area and walked over next to Rogue. "Tha'd be nice, Ah ain't flown, like really flown in a long time. Ddin' know Ah could do the wind thing...guess it makes sense. Ah am the lucky one among my family, they all got...look powers, Ah jus float around." She confessed, honestly quite a bit, it was harder for Mel to hold back, she liked being honest and open it was probably why she got over things so quick.

Rogue could sympathize with the younger girl, but at the same time the school had been home longer for her than anywhere else. "Yer mom still tawlks t'ya though. Lot o'folks don't get that," Rogue included. She kept the old note of pain out her voice and offered a gentle smile instead, trying to nudge Melody to looking on the bright side of things. Her smile turned amused as one eyebrow quirked, "Oh if yew think that's bad, wait til yew hear some k'em bout me." And that was all Rogue was going to say about that.

Hearing Melody talk about powers she and her siblings ended up with, Rogue sighed. "All powers 'ave their ups an' downs," She held up a hand and wiggled bare fingers. "Mine are where Ah can copy an' mutant's powers by touchin'em. Th' downside is if Ah hang on too long Ah can kill ya," And got a shadow stuck in her head, but that was private. "Ya gotta look on th' bright side kiddo," Rogue advised as she and Melody settled into baking up the last of the cookies together.

The young girl sighed a little and shrugged just a bit. "Oh, Ah know. Ah try not ta bring it up since most folk get thrown out fer bein mutants. It's kinda sad really, like a parent should never not love their child." She sighed a bit listening to Rogue before holding up her hands and kind of stepping back a bit. "That is...scary...Ah wasn sayin Ah don like my powers, people dream a flyin like me. Ah was sayin Ah'm lucky, Ah can hide, Jay can't. Sam can't really either, poor Paige had her skin fall off..."

She took a moment after the second round of blunt honesty and sighed. "But, ya mentioned a place where Ah can practice? Ah don wanna do it outside, Ah umm had an incident." The girls cheeks turned a slight pink before she plucked a cookie and took a bite of it savoring the taste. "Ah will admit. Ah ain't crazy bout bein an x-men...er whatever ya call yerselfs now. But, Ah do wanna help people, jus with none of the fightin and such...Ah don't like fightin. Not even the arguing kind."
